Permanent Makeup also referred to as micro-pigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, is a process whereby completely natural pigments are implanted beneath the epidermis (top layer of skin), into the dermal layer (second layer of skin), by tiny needles. This technique has been medically developed and specifically designed for a safe application. The pigments used have been specially formulated for cosmetic application.
Choosing a Permanent Cosmetics Technician
Once you have made the decision to have Permanent Cosmetics applied you have the important task of finding a qualified technician to do the work for you. This is a critical decision to make your permanent makeup specials. Locate a technician, in the same manner, you would a doctor, dentist, etc. Since there are no uniform regulations in the country, it is mandatory you learn as much as possible about the industry so you can determine who is a qualified professional in this field. Ask about the technician’s background. How long have they been in the industry and how many procedures have they done? Ask to see all certificates of training, before and after pictures if they are a member of a professional society such as the SPCP.
Does the procedure hurt?
This may vary according to each individual’s pain threshold, however, topical anesthetics are used to numb the area and minimize discomfort. Most people describe a mild pricking sensation or like plucking the brows. It may be sore in the area for up to a week later, but it is not anything that should keep you from going about your normal routine.
Is it safe?
Allergic reactions to permanent cosmetic procedures are extremely rare. The cosmetic pigments are made from completely natural ingredients, and disposable sterile needles and surgical gloves are used for each procedure. However, micro-pigmentation is a skin invasive procedure. It is extremely important to consult an experienced professional technician who is licensed, qualified and conscientious.
How long does each procedure take?
Times vary according to the individual’s sensitivity of the skin. Allowing time for anesthetics to take effect, implanting of the pigment, and some final fine tuning of the procedure, average time for the initial visit is 1 – 2 hours for eyeliner, eyebrows or lip liner and about 3 to 4 hours for full lip color.
How many appointments will be necessary?
Four to six weeks after the initial application, a follow-up visit may be required to perfect the lines or color. This visit does not require as much time as the initial procedure. Not every client will need a touch up, but it is included in the initial price if necessary. Lips usually require at least 2 visits to get the required color saturation.

Are Permanent Cosmetics truly permanent?
A variety of factors influence the longevity of Permanent Cosmetics. If the face is exposed to exfoliating treatments, ultra-violet rays, or any types of skin care products such as Alpha- hydroxy, Retin-A, and glycolic acids which will fade treated areas. Many clients want to know why their permanent makeup fades more quickly than regular tattoos. I usually tell my clients that they can expect their brows to last 2 to 3 years if they are a light color inks (blonds and light browns) and 3 to 5 years for darker colors such as black and dark brown. Eyeliners can last up to 10 years if they are done in black.
Why is it so costly?
Micro-pigmentation is a surgical procedure which means there is a slight risk of infection and or an allergic reaction. The equipment must be kept sterile and the anesthesia and ink is costly. The insurance for permanent makeup is also costly. This is a very specialized field and not everyone is good at it. It takes years to perfect this skill and you want to go to an artist that is experienced and has a gift for seeing what will enhance your God-given features. You are paying someone to tattoo your face. Do you really want to go to the cheapest technician? It’s funny how people will think nothing of paying $150 every 6 weeks to keep their hair styled and foiled, but think $400 is too much for a procedure that will give them years of lasting beauty. Just think about if permanent makeup costs are worth it.
What happens with eyebrow tattoos when you get older and your natural eyebrows turn gray?
Going gray generally happens gradually for most people and usually not even all the hairs may be affected. So any subsequent touch up would be an opportunity to address the changing color (a brow that is well-defined in color and shape can easily camouflage a few stray gray hairs).
