As we age, we lose our natural ability to produce the skin-supporting proteins that are necessary to keep our skin strong, supple, and smooth-looking. So when your collagen production fails, it’s time to turn to a cosmetic solution that can restore your youthful visage. At Aesthetic Anti-Aging Center in Macon, GA, we believe that Juvederm injections are the right treatment to revitalize your skin volume and help you look younger.
What Is the Best Age to Get Juvederm Injections?
As a general rule of thumb, anyone over the age of 21 is eligible to have Juvederm filler injections, so there isn’t a “best” age to have this treatment. When this dermal filler first came out, the treatment was usually reserved for patients in their 40s and 50s who were using the treatment to restore lost volume for moderate and severe skin laxity. Now, however, it’s very common for this treatment to be used by patients who are in their 20s and 30s, as well.
While younger people may only have mild signs of aging, such as the beginnings of fine lines and wrinkles, it’s often the case that this treatment is used to prevent further aging or stall the natural aging process. This treatment is also used as a non-surgical contouring treatment for young and mature patients. Of course, depending on the formula, some variants of this dermal filler are appropriate for patients of different ages.
Ultra
Ultra XC is the densest and thickest dermal filler in the family of Juvederm products, which is why Ultra XC is ideal for treating moderate and severe skin laxity, as well as deeper wrinkles and dynamic wrinkles that typically occur in patients who are 40 or older. Ultra XC is also one of the most versatile fillers in the family of products because it can be used to contour, as well. For example, Ultra is commonly used to fill in lip lines and enhance the shape of the lips.
Voluma
Voluma XC is another dense dermal filler that is largely used to address moderate to severe skin laxity and wrinkles. Voluma is most appropriate for patients who are over the age of 40, although it can be used for younger patients who have hollowness in the cheeks or under the eyes. Voluma is designed to be used specifically on the cheeks to enhance their shape and fill-in for lost volume associated with aging.
Vollure
Vollure XC is a diverse filler treatment that can be used to address fine lines and wrinkles on virtually all areas of the face. This particular filler can be used for patients of all ages, although it may be most appropriate for patients who are in their 30s and who are trying to limit the visible signs of aging on the skin surface. Fine lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth usually benefit the best from Vollure XC.
Volbella
Volbella XC is a filler that has been designated to fill volume lost in the lips as well as contour the shape of the lips and treat mild to moderate lines around the mouth. Volbella can be used by patients in their 20s, as well as older patients who want to contour the shape of their lips to achieve a more ideal pout. Volbella is ideal for smoothing the appearance of lipstick lines, smoker lines, and laugh lines.
Everything You Need to Know About Juvederm Treatments
Now that you know this family of dermal fillers can be used by patients of virtually all ages, provided they have mild to moderate age-related concerns, is there anything else you need to know about this treatment? Depending on your aesthetic goals, there are actually a few more details you will need to consider before seeking your treatment, such as:
Your Filler Options
Because this family of fillers has five different variants for you to choose from, you will have the ability to choose the filler option that is ideal for your appearance concerns and aesthetic goals. For example, if you only have general anti-aging concerns, you may want to simply use Vollure to smooth fine lines and wrinkles.
If you want to correct volume loss in larger areas, such as the cheeks, or you want to contour your features, then Voluma or Ultra may be better options. If you only want to restore volume in your lips, then Volbella is likely your best option. We will help you select the best filler option to achieve all of your aesthetic goals.
Your Consultation
Your consultation may be one of the most important steps of your treatment. The consultation is the first step of your treatment process and gives us the opportunity to gather important information about your goals, expectations, and appearance concerns. One part of your consultation will be examining the condition of your skin, particularly any fine lines and wrinkles you bring to our attention.
Depending on your treatment goals, it may be helpful for you to bring in a reference photo so we can have a clear picture of what you want your end result to look like. This may be an important part of your consultation if you intend to use dermal fillers to contour any of your features. Other than that, your consultation will also consist of gathering some relevant medical information about you, such as any drug allergies you may have.
Your Preparation
Preparing for injectable treatments is overall very simple if you keep a few rules in mind. For at least two weeks before your appointment, you should avoid direct unprotected sunlight and cosmetic treatments, such as laser skin resurfacing. For at least seven days before your appointment, you should stop using Retinol and stop taking blood-thinning medications. For 24 hours before your appointment, be sure to hydrate well and keep your skin moist.
Some patients like to prepare for dermal filler injections by using Arnica Montana supplements. Arnica supplements are scientifically proven to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling as a result of injectable treatments, which will make your recovery more comfortable and allow you to enjoy your results sooner. If you are using Arnica supplements, please take them at least three days before your appointment.
Your Treatment Process
Your treatment will consist of injections being made to the sub-dermal layers of your skin with a small, thin needle. It’s likely your treatment will consist of one or more syringes of the dermal filler product, so you may require several injections to be made to produce your desired results. Your treatment appointments will generally take about 20 to 30 minutes to complete.
Your Comfort
Some patients are concerned about pain during their treatment, but fortunately, dermal filler treatments are not painful. For one thing, this particular brand of dermal filler is all combined with lidocaine, which is a local numbing agent that makes it more comfortable for your skin to absorb the hyaluronic acid filler. Additionally, some patients opt to use a topical numbing cream prior to treatment, or even use an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as Tylenol, to stay comfortable during their treatment.
If you intend to use a topical numbing cream for your treatment, please let us know prior to the start time of your appointment. The topical numbing cream can take up to 20 minutes to fully activate, so the sooner we can apply the cream, the sooner you can complete your treatment and resume your normal daily activities.
Your Aftercare
There isn’t much you will need to do during your recovery period, as there is no formal downtime associated with dermal filler juvederm treatments. However, you will need to keep in mind certain aftercare instructions to ensure that you achieve your desired results. For example, it’s important to continue avoiding using blood-thinning medications and Retinol for at least seven days, as well as continue to use Arnica Montana for at least five days after your appointment.
Other aftercare instructions will include avoiding direct unprotected sunlight, hot water, steam, and strenuous exercise that builds up a sweat. Light exercise, such as walking or yoga, is permissible. During the first two to three days after your treatment, you may also want to lightly massage your face to ensure that the dermal filler solution settles evenly beneath your skin surface.
Your Results
The results of your treatment will be immediately obvious after your appointment, sometimes within hours. However, these initial results are due to the injection of additional moisture and volume to your skin, so don’t be alarmed if it seems like your results “deflate” after a few days. Your final results will generally be visible about two weeks after your treatment appointment.
Your final results will mirror your initial results, with the exception that your final results will be partly due to the natural production of collagen beneath your skin surface. Your results will likely last for several months depending on the exact variant of filler you are using for your treatment. For example, Voluma treatments can last up to two years at a time, while Volbella may only last for six to nine months at a time.
Your Maintenence Appointments
One of the best things about dermal fillers is the fact that a single treatment is potent enough to produce your desired results. However, because the results of your treatment are temporary, you will need to have maintenance appointments to continue enjoying your results. The frequency of your maintenance appointments will depend on the version of the Juvederm filler you are using. Many patients opt to schedule maintenance appointments about once a year, or more frequently if necessary.
Who Are Good Candidates?
Most adults over the age of 21 are good candidates for this treatment. There are a few eligibility requirements that patients will need to meet, such as not being currently pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s important that you are not allergic to lidocaine or the proteins used in the dermal filler, and you must not have a history of a severe allergic reaction. Good candidates are also those who have healthy skin that is not prone to scarring.
You are likely a good candidate for dermal filler juvederm treatments if you want to:
- Restore fullness to the face
- Contour the cheeks and lips
- Smooth fine lines and wrinkles
